Dr. Blain is an internationally known expert in cell cycle and cancer biology and has been studying cell cycle regulation for more than 20 years. She is an NIH funded investigator and associate professor in cell biology and pediatrics at the SUNY Downstate Medical Center, who has two several basic science and translational projects, studying the role of the oncogene cyclin D-cdk4 and p27 in breast cancer and multiple myeloma.
Dr. Blain is a decorated educator and is currently the director of the Neoplasia subunit in the College of Medicine at the SUNY Downstate Medical Center. She has mentored more than 20 graduate and medical students in her laboratory, and several have graduated with research in excellence commendations or the prestigious Robert F. Furchgott Award for Excellence in Research.
Dr. Blain is the co-founder of CONCARLO Holdings, LLC, which has the goal of developing diagnostic and therapeutic applications for cdk4-dependent diseases. CONCARLO’s first project, IpY, is a peptide inhibitor, packaged in lipid-based nanoparticles, which will be used to treat women with ER/PR+, Her2- breast cancer. CONCARLO’s second project, ApY, is a companion diagnostic to identify patients responsive to cdk4 inhibitory therapies. CONCARLO Holdings, LLC and Dr. Blain were selected by the NYC Economic Development fund for the highly competitive SBIR Impact program, which provides one on one mentorship in the development of STTR and SBIR applications for the NIH.
